US F-1 Student Visa for Indian Students: 2026 I-20, SEVIS & DS-160 Guide

Follow the F-1 process from a SEVP-certified school and Form I-20 through SEVIS, DS-160, funding evidence, the interview, and arrival in the United States.

What the F-1 visa covers

The F-1 visa is the usual nonimmigrant route for full-time academic study at a US university, college, high school, seminary, conservatory, or language-training programme. Vocational or other recognised nonacademic study generally uses the M category instead. A degree or certificate programme cannot normally be undertaken after entering on a visitor visa, so confirm the correct classification before applying.

Three decisions remain separate: the institution decides admission, the school issues Form I-20 after completing its checks, and a US consular officer decides the visa application. The visa lets you travel to a US port of entry and request admission; it does not itself guarantee admission, and no adviser can guarantee the visa outcome.

The correct order: admission, I-20, SEVIS, DS-160, appointment

Begin with admission to a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Use the Department of Homeland Security School Search to check the school and the specific campus. After acceptance and any required financial review, the designated school official (DSO) creates your Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) record and issues Form I-20.

Check and sign the I-20, pay the I-901 SEVIS fee for the SEVIS ID on that form, complete Form DS-160, follow the current India appointment and fee-payment instructions, and attend the required appointment or interview. Processes and appointment availability can change, so use the live instructions for the embassy or consulate where you apply rather than an old checklist or an agent-created portal.

  • Receive admission from an SEVP-certified school and choose the offer you will use.
  • Submit the school's I-20 request and acceptable financial evidence.
  • Review every field on Form I-20 and ask the DSO to correct an error before applying.
  • Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee using the matching SEVIS ID and retain the receipt.
  • Complete and submit DS-160 accurately, then save its barcode confirmation page.
  • Use the official country-specific instructions to pay the visa fee and arrange the appointment.

Read Form I-20 before you pay anything

Form I-20 identifies you, the school and campus, education level, major, programme dates, earliest admission date, estimated costs, and the funding information recorded by the school. Compare the spelling and order of your name, date of birth, citizenship, passport details where shown, programme, campus, start date, and SEVIS ID against your documents and offer.

You and the DSO must sign the form. If the school changes a material detail or issues a replacement, confirm whether your SEVIS ID remains the same before using an earlier fee receipt or DS-160. Do not edit the I-20 yourself. Contact the DSO whenever a fact is wrong or your plans change.

2026 fees: US$350 for SEVIS and US$185 for the visa application

The current I-901 SEVIS fee for an F-1 or M-1 student is US$350. Pay it through the official SEVP payment website and make sure the name and SEVIS ID match Form I-20. An F-2 spouse or child needs an individual dependent I-20 and visa application but does not pay a separate I-901 SEVIS fee.

The Department of State currently lists a non-refundable US$185 application-processing fee for an F visa. Its India reciprocity schedule currently shows no additional F-1 issuance fee for Indian nationals. Fees and payment procedures can change, so verify both official pages immediately before paying; a refusal does not make the application fee refundable.

These government charges are separate from university deposits, tuition, document delivery, travel, insurance, and any service charges. Never pay a person who promises an appointment or guaranteed approval, and use the official payment route shown in the live application instructions.

There is no single nationwide F-1 bank-balance figure

US guidance does not publish one universal dollar amount that every F-1 applicant must keep in a bank account. The school must review financial support before issuing the I-20, and the I-20 records an estimated period of costs and the funding sources reported to the school. A consular officer may also request evidence showing how you will pay educational, living, and travel costs.

Use the amount and period stated by your chosen school as the starting point, then build a realistic plan for the full programme. Evidence may include personal or family bank records, education-loan sanction documents, scholarship or assistantship letters, sponsor evidence, and income or asset records requested by the school or post. The exact documents accepted for I-20 issuance are set by the institution, so follow its current instructions.

A credible file explains who owns each account, your relationship to each sponsor, the source and availability of funds, what is already paid, and how later years remain affordable. Do not move temporary money only to create a balance, alter statements, hide loans, or claim funding that is not available. Keep currency conversion and future work out of any calculation unless the school or authority explicitly permits it.

Complete DS-160 from your records, not from memory

Form DS-160 is the online nonimmigrant visa application. F-1 applicants need the SEVIS ID and school address from Form I-20 while completing it. Answer in English using English characters except where the form specifically asks for a name in the native alphabet, and give complete, truthful information about identity, travel, education, employment, security questions, and prior US applications.

Save the application ID while working, review every answer before submission, and retain the barcode confirmation page; the full form is not what you bring to the interview. If a material error is discovered after submission, follow the current appointment-system and consular instructions rather than assuming you can silently correct it at the counter. Your DS-160, I-20, passport, academic record, finances, and spoken answers should tell the same factual story.

Prepare a compact, evidence-led document file

The Department of State lists the passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt where required, compliant photograph if the upload failed, and signed Form I-20 among the core documents. The consular officer may request academic preparation, your intention to depart after the authorised study, and evidence of how you will pay all costs. Follow the exact appointment instructions for India because document handling and local procedures can change.

  • Passport meeting the applicable validity rule and any previous passports requested.
  • DS-160 barcode confirmation and appointment confirmation.
  • Signed Form I-20 and I-901 SEVIS fee receipt with the same SEVIS ID.
  • Visa-fee receipt and a compliant photograph when required by the instructions.
  • Offer or admission letter, transcripts, degrees, certificates, and required test results.
  • I-20 funding evidence: bank records, loan sanction, scholarship or assistantship, and sponsor documents as applicable.
  • Clear evidence for study gaps, work history, or a change of academic field when relevant.
  • Dependants' individual I-20s and relationship evidence if a spouse or child is applying.

Interview preparation should connect course, finances, and plans

A consular officer determines whether you qualify under US law. Be ready to explain why this programme and institution make sense after your previous study or work, what the course will cost, who will pay, and what realistic direction you expect after completion. Use your own concise language and answer the question asked; memorised scripts and generic rankings can create confusion rather than credibility.

Review all submitted facts before the appointment, including previous refusals and travel. If you do not know or do not understand something, say so honestly or ask for clarification. An I-20, admission, scholarship, large balance, or polished answer does not guarantee issuance. The existing EduLeaf F-1 interview guide gives a deeper set of question categories; this article focuses on the complete application sequence.

Apply early, but do not travel too early

The Department of State says a new F or M student visa may be issued up to 365 days before the course start date, but an initial student cannot enter the United States more than 30 days before that date. Appointment availability and case processing vary by location and season, and some applications require administrative processing after interview.

Apply as soon as your I-20 and preparation allow, but never invent urgency or make duplicate or speculative plans. The Department of State expressly warns that visa issuance is not guaranteed; avoid final travel plans and non-refundable tickets until the visa is issued. Once received, check the printed biographic and visa details promptly.

Arrival and maintaining F-1 status

Carry—not check—your passport and visa, signed I-20, admission information, SEVIS receipt, financial evidence, school contact details, and US address information. At the port of entry, Customs and Border Protection decides admission. A visa's expiry date is not the same as the period you may remain in the United States; F-1 admission and status depend on complying with the programme rules.

Report to the school by its deadline, remain in the required full course of study, and keep the DSO informed. The Form I-20 instructions require a student to report the US address to the DSO and report a new address within 10 days after moving. Do not drop courses, transfer, work, take a long absence, or change programmes based only on informal advice—ask the DSO first and obtain any required authorisation.

Employment is restricted and depends on the type, timing, and authorisation. Do not treat part-time work as guaranteed funding. The Department of State states that an F-1 student generally has 60 days after the programme end date, including any authorised practical training, to depart, transfer, or take another permitted step; a student who violates status may not receive that grace period.

A final F-1 application checklist

This guide was reviewed on 4 October 2026. Recheck every official source and your school's instructions before acting because fees, forms, appointment procedures, and immigration rules can change.

  • Verify the school and campus in the official SEVP School Search.
  • Check every I-20 field, sign it, and keep the DSO's contact details.
  • Pay I-901 only against the correct SEVIS ID and save the receipt.
  • Complete DS-160 accurately and retain its barcode confirmation.
  • Follow the current India fee and appointment instructions from the official route.
  • Organise academic and funding evidence around the I-20 costs and your full-course budget.
  • Prepare honest, concise explanations rather than memorised interview scripts.
  • Wait for issuance before non-refundable travel and enter no earlier than permitted.
  • Hand-carry the admission and immigration file and report to the DSO after arrival.

Frequently asked questions

How much are the US F-1 visa fees for an Indian student in 2026?

The current I-901 SEVIS fee for an F-1 student is US$350, and the current non-refundable F-visa application fee is US$185. The India reciprocity schedule currently lists no additional F-1 issuance fee. Verify all live fee pages before payment.

How much bank balance is required for an F-1 visa?

There is no single nationwide minimum published for every applicant. Start with the estimated costs and funding period on your Form I-20, meet the school's evidence rules, and be able to show a credible plan for tuition, living, and travel costs for the programme.

Can I complete DS-160 before receiving Form I-20?

Wait for the I-20. An F-1 DS-160 asks for the SEVIS ID and the school or programme address shown on that form, and those details should match your application record.

How early can I apply for and use a new F-1 visa?

A new student visa may be issued up to 365 days before the programme start date, but an initial student may not enter the United States more than 30 days before that date.

Does an F-1 visa guarantee entry into the United States?

No. A visa allows you to travel to a US port of entry and request admission. Customs and Border Protection makes the admission decision, so hand-carry your passport, visa, signed I-20, school details, and supporting evidence.

Can an F-1 student work to pay tuition and living costs?

F-1 employment is restricted and may require DSO recommendation or government authorisation depending on the category. Do not count on future work as guaranteed funding; discuss any proposed job or training with the DSO before starting.
