Sweden Student Visa for Indian Students: 2026 Residence Permit Guide
Plan Sweden study and residence-permit steps with the current maintenance amount, financial-evidence rules, New Delhi biometrics, 2026 work cap, and post-study options.
For long-term study, apply for a residence permit—not only a visa
An Indian citizen admitted to full-time higher education in Sweden will normally need a residence permit when the study period exceeds three months. The permit must be issued before travel. Although students often search for a “Sweden student visa,” the long-stay process is a residence-permit application decided by the Swedish Migration Agency.
Admission and immigration are separate decisions. You need a valid passport, final admission to full-time on-campus study, payment of any tuition fee that is due, sufficient maintenance funds, and appropriate health-insurance arrangements. An offer from a university does not guarantee a residence permit, and no adviser can guarantee an outcome.
Start with the international admissions round
Most international applicants use Universityadmissions.se to apply for Swedish bachelor’s and master’s programmes. Choose the first admissions round when possible: it is scheduled early enough for fee-paying students to pay tuition, apply for a residence permit, arrange housing, and prepare to move. The later round is primarily designed for applicants already living in Sweden and may not leave enough time for a new residence permit.
For autumn 2027 entry, the current first-round schedule opens on 16 October 2026, closes on 15 January 2027, and sets 1 February as the application-fee and supporting-document deadline. Master’s results are scheduled for 1 April and bachelor’s results for 8 April. Treat these as the central portal dates; a university or programme may publish additional requirements, so verify the live course page before applying.
- Check programme-specific academic prerequisites and English requirements.
- Rank choices carefully because ranking can affect the admissions result.
- Submit country-specific academic documents in the required format.
- Pay the application fee by the deadline unless an official exemption applies.
- Compare tuition, housing, insurance, travel, and living costs before accepting an offer.
Application fee, tuition, and final admission
University Admissions currently charges fee-paying applicants SEK 900 for one semester’s admissions application. That single fee covers the courses, programmes, and admissions rounds submitted through Universityadmissions.se or Antagning.se for the same semester; it is non-refundable. Tuition is separate and varies by institution and programme.
For the residence permit, the Swedish Migration Agency considers a tuition-paying student finally admitted only after the required tuition fee has been paid. The university reports the payment to the agency. Follow the university invoice and deadline exactly, retain the receipt, and confirm refund conditions before transferring a large amount.
2026 maintenance funds: SEK 10,656 per month
For a residence-permit application submitted in 2026, the maintenance requirement is at least SEK 10,656 for each month of the requested permit period. A 12-month period therefore requires SEK 127,872 for the student’s living costs. This is not a complete study budget: tuition, travel, housing deposits, insurance, books, winter clothing, and setup expenses may sit outside the maintenance calculation.
The amount is tied to the year of application and can change. Recheck it on the Swedish Migration Agency website immediately before applying. If qualifying free food or housing is provided through the higher education institution or an organisation working with international exchange, the 2026 amount may be reduced by SEK 2,960 per month for food and SEK 4,736 per month for housing.
If family members apply with you, the 2026 calculation adds SEK 4,440 per month for a spouse or cohabiting partner and SEK 2,664 per month for each child. The agency assesses the family’s overall ability to support itself.
Use the correct type of financial evidence
The agency permits a combination of personal bank assets, qualifying scholarships, student grants or loans from the country of origin, an accepted sponsor, and documented employment income. The evidence rules differ by funding route, so label each source clearly and show how it covers the entire requested period.
Personal funds must be in an account belonging to you and accessible to you; an accompanying partner may also have withdrawal access. Shares, credit, microfinance-bank assets, and money locked during the permit period do not count as personal bank assets. A private individual such as a parent is not accepted as a sponsor under this definition. Money given by relatives must instead be transferred to an accessible account in your name and then evidenced as your personal funds.
A personal bank statement must be issued no more than four months before the date you want the permit to begin and show the account holder, bank, issue date, balance, and currency. Scholarship, education-loan, grant, sponsorship, or employment documents must contain the details specified for that route. Do not submit unexplained transfers, altered records, or funds you cannot genuinely access.
Documents and health insurance
Upload clear passport copies, the final admission decision confirming full-time on-campus study, financial evidence, and any health-insurance evidence that applies. Documents should be in Swedish or English; a document translated from another language should have a certified translation accompanied by a copy in the original language.
Students admitted for less than one year need comprehensive health insurance unless coverage is provided through the institution. The policy must cover the entire stay as well as emergency and other medical care, hospitalisation, emergency dental treatment, and medically necessary repatriation. For studies lasting at least one year, the agency directs students to register in Sweden’s population register, which provides access to healthcare and dental care under the applicable Swedish system.
- Valid passport covering the intended permit period.
- Final admission decision for full-time, on-site study.
- Evidence that any required tuition payment has been completed.
- Financial evidence matching the exact funding route used.
- Comprehensive health-insurance evidence for a stay under one year, where required.
- Certified translations plus copies of the original documents, where applicable.
- Relationship, custody, insurance, and additional maintenance evidence if family applies.
Submit the residence-permit application early
Apply after final admission and the required tuition payment. In the online application, choose the Swedish embassy or consulate-general you would visit if asked to present your passport or attend an interview. Review all dates, passport details, course information, finances, and family information before paying and submitting.
The current adult residence-permit application fee is SEK 1,500 and the fee for a child under 18 is SEK 750, subject to listed exemptions. The Migration Agency’s live statistics reviewed on 2 October 2026 say that 75% of recently decided higher-education cases were decided within three months. That is a backward-looking statistic, not a promised processing time; individual cases can take longer, especially when information is missing or additional checks are required.
The agency processes applications in order and states that priority is not available. Apply promptly once eligible, monitor your account and email, and respond accurately to any request. Avoid booking non-refundable travel before approval and permit-card arrangements are complete.
Passport check, biometrics, and residence permit card in India
Before a decision, you must present your passport. The Migration Agency may offer a digital passport check or instruct you to visit the selected embassy or consulate-general. If you are called for an interview, you must follow the in-person appointment instructions even if a digital check was completed.
Sweden Abroad states that biometrics for residence-permit cards in India can be submitted only at the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi. Bring the same passport registered in the application. Biometrics can be provided before or after the decision and may be taken when an in-person passport check is requested. Follow the email you receive rather than travelling to the embassy without confirming the current procedure and opening hours.
After approval and biometrics, Sweden Abroad says card production and delivery to the embassy normally takes about four weeks. This is an estimate, not a guarantee. The card proves that you hold a residence permit but is not an identity document or travel document. Check the live collection or consular-courier instructions before making travel plans.
2026 rules for work, study progress, and address reporting
For a bachelor’s or master’s student whose residence permit is granted on or after 11 June 2026, paid work is generally limited to 15 hours per week during the semester. The official rules allow specified exceptions, including work forming part of the education and work during June, July, or August. Working beyond the permitted limit can affect the current permit or a future extension, so do not base your funding plan on unrestricted term-time work.
The same 2026 reform tightened academic-progress expectations for extensions. A full-time higher-education student generally needs at least 37.5 credits in the first year and 45 credits per year from the second year onwards. Keep transcripts and records of any documented circumstances that affect progress.
Students covered by the new rules who are outside Sweden must notify the Migration Agency of their Swedish address within 30 days of entering the country, and report a later change of address within 30 days. If population registration is complete, the separate notification duty does not apply. Read the decision letter carefully because transitional rules depend on when the permit was granted.
Permit length and the route after graduation
A higher-education study permit can be granted for a maximum of one or two years depending on the institution, but never beyond the course or passport validity. It can be extended if you continue to meet the requirements. When the permit covers the full programme, the agency adds two weeks to the permit period.
After completing an eligible Swedish higher-education programme lasting at least two semesters, a graduate may apply from within Sweden for a permit to look for work or explore starting a business. The application must be submitted before the study permit expires, and the applicant must show completion, financial maintenance, and any required health insurance.
For bachelor’s or master’s graduates, the post-study permit can be granted for up to one year. It is a separate application and not automatic. Verify its live requirements when graduation approaches rather than treating future work permission as guaranteed.
A practical Sweden application checklist
Build one timeline covering admission, fees, tuition, permit evidence, passport presentation, biometrics, the residence permit card, housing, and arrival. Recheck every official page before submitting because fees, maintenance amounts, processing statistics, and procedures can change.
EduLeaf Consultants can help you compare programmes, organise documentation, and review whether your application story is consistent. The university decides admission and the Swedish Migration Agency decides the residence permit; neither result can be guaranteed.
