SAT 2026–27 for Indian Students: Fees, Dates, Pattern & Registration

Plan the digital SAT with the current US$111 base international cost, remaining 2026–27 dates, India-specific ID rules, Bluebook setup, and a practical preparation timeline.

What is the SAT, and should an Indian student take it?

The SAT is a digital undergraduate admissions test with Reading and Writing and Math sections. A score may support applications to institutions that accept or require it, but there is no single worldwide SAT rule. Requirements can differ by university, campus, course and entry term, and an institution may be test-required, test-flexible, test-optional or test-free.

Build the college list before booking. Check each institution’s official admissions page for your intake and record whether a score is required, accepted, recommended or not considered; whether international applicants follow the same policy; the last accepted test date; and whether official score reports are needed. An SAT booking is useful only when it fits the application strategy and leaves enough time for scores to arrive.

Remaining SAT dates for the 2026–27 testing year

As reviewed on 18 October 2026, College Board lists five remaining SAT Weekend dates through June 2027. Its deadlines expire at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time in the United States, not at midnight in India. Test-centre seats can fill before a registration deadline, so shortlist locations and register early rather than treating the published date as a seat guarantee.

  • 7 November 2026: regular registration deadline 23 October; late registration and change deadline 27 October.
  • 5 December 2026: regular registration deadline 20 November; late registration and change deadline 24 November.
  • 6 March 2027: regular registration deadline 19 February; late registration and change deadline 23 February.
  • 1 May 2027: regular registration deadline 16 April; late registration and change deadline 20 April.
  • 5 June 2027: regular registration deadline 21 May; late registration and change deadline 25 May.

SAT fees for students testing in India

For international testing through June 2027, College Board lists a US$68 SAT registration fee plus a US$43 international fee, making the standard published charge US$111 before any optional or situation-specific fee. Do not convert that figure using an old exchange rate: the rupee amount charged can depend on the live rate and payment provider.

College Board also lists a US$24 test-centre fee at selected locations, US$38 for late registration, US$34 to change only the test centre, US$34 for a regular cancellation and US$44 for a late cancellation. An additional score report is US$15. Fees and centre-specific charges can change, so confirm the total shown in the official registration flow before paying.

Digital SAT pattern, timing and adaptive modules

The standard digital SAT has 98 questions and takes 2 hours 14 minutes of testing time, excluding check-in and other administration. Reading and Writing contains 54 questions across two 32-minute modules. Math contains 44 questions across two 35-minute modules. A 10-minute break separates the two sections.

Each section uses multistage adaptation. The first module contains a mix of difficulty levels; performance in that module helps determine the mix in the second. You can move among questions and change answers while the current module is open, but you cannot return after moving to the next module. The adaptive design means a raw count of correct answers does not convert to one universal score in a simple way.

  • Reading and Writing: 64 minutes, 54 questions, two modules.
  • Math: 70 minutes, 44 questions, two modules.
  • Total testing time: 134 minutes, plus a 10-minute section break.
  • Bluebook includes a calculator for the Math section; an acceptable handheld calculator is optional.
  • There is no penalty that makes leaving a question blank preferable to making your best informed choice.

SAT scores and how to set a realistic target

The digital SAT total score runs from 400 to 1600. Reading and Writing and Math are each reported from 200 to 800, and the two section scores form the total. There is no universal passing score and no score that guarantees admission. A useful target depends on the policy and applicant profile of each course or university.

Use official university data where available, but interpret it carefully. A published middle range describes a prior admitted class; it is not automatically a minimum, and the profile of students who submitted scores can differ under test-optional policies. Set a working range for each college, then decide whether your practice results make the SAT a productive part of the application.

How to register for the SAT from India

Create or sign in to your own College Board account, explore available test centres, choose the date, complete your identifying information, upload the required registration photo and pay through the official flow. College Board says the student must register for themself; a parent or counsellor cannot complete the registration in the student’s place.

Enter your legal name with the physical ID you will carry in front of you. After payment, save the confirmation and check the My SAT record for the correct date, centre and personal details. If the preferred centre is full, compare nearby official locations rather than using an intermediary who claims to guarantee a seat.

  • Confirm every target university’s testing policy and score deadline.
  • Create one College Board account in the student’s legal name.
  • Choose the date and an available test centre in the official registration system.
  • Upload a compliant, recent registration photo.
  • Pay only after checking the full international and centre-specific total.
  • Save the registration details and calendar the Bluebook setup window.

India-specific SAT ID rules

For testing in India, College Board currently accepts a valid passport with the holder’s name, photograph and signature; a valid Aadhaar PVC Card with name and photograph; an original hard-copy Aadhaar letter as issued by the Government of India; or the specified US Common Access Card. It says printouts, copies, screenshots and electronic Aadhaar cards are not accepted.

The document must be original, physical, valid, in good condition and show a name that exactly matches the admission ticket. Do not assume a school ID, PAN card, photocopy or digital document will be accepted in India merely because it is familiar. Recheck the country-specific ID page shortly before test day because identification rules can change.

Bluebook and device setup

SAT Weekend is taken in the Bluebook app on an approved device. Current options include a compatible Windows laptop or tablet, Mac laptop, iPad or school-managed Chromebook. A personal Chromebook, mobile phone, Linux device or PureOS device is not supported. Download Bluebook on the actual test device early and complete at least one full practice session on it.

College Board recommends downloading the app at least 30 days before testing. Between one and five days before the test, complete exam setup in Bluebook so the test can download and the admission ticket can be generated. If you cannot access or borrow a compatible device, you may request a College Board loan after registering, at least 30 days before test day; approval and availability are not guaranteed.

A practical eight-week SAT preparation plan

Start with an official timed Bluebook practice test. Review by skill, time pressure and error type rather than recording only the total score. College Board provides free full-length Bluebook practice, a Student Question Bank that can be filtered by section, domain, skill and difficulty, and Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy.

Adaptive testing rewards consistent reasoning and timing across both modules. Practise using the embedded tools, navigating within a module and deciding when to move on. Keep an error log that distinguishes knowledge gaps, misreading, calculation mistakes and time-management problems; the remedy is different for each.

  • Weeks 1–2: take a diagnostic, verify the target range and rebuild weak fundamentals.
  • Weeks 3–4: use official skill-filtered questions and review every incorrect or uncertain answer.
  • Weeks 5–6: add timed modules, refine pacing and practise with the Bluebook calculator and annotation tools.
  • Week 7: complete a full-length official practice test on the device and setup you expect to use.
  • Week 8: focus on recurring errors, complete exam setup when available and protect sleep and routine.

What to carry on SAT test day

Bring the fully charged approved device with Bluebook installed and exam setup completed, the up-to-date admission ticket, acceptable physical photo ID, your College Board username and password, and pens or pencils for scratch work. A permitted handheld calculator is optional because Bluebook includes one. A charging cable or portable charger, snack and drink are sensible additions for the break.

College Board says the admission ticket becomes available after exam setup, starting five days before the test; a printed copy is preferred. Check the current arrival instructions and centre status before leaving home. Phones, smartwatches, notes and other prohibited devices cannot be accessed during the test or breaks, so read the current rules instead of relying on what was allowed at another exam.

Score release and sending scores

College Board says SAT scores are typically available online two to four weeks after the administration, while each published date may have a more specific release date. Build extra time between the test and the university deadline for score release, any review and the institution’s processing.

For a weekend SAT registration, you can send scores to up to four organizations without an extra score-report fee if you select or change the recipients by nine days after the test. Later or additional reports are currently US$15 each. Before using the free reports, confirm whether a university permits self-reporting at application, requires an official report, uses superscoring or asks for all test dates. College Board sends a complete test-date score, not a Math section from one date combined with Reading and Writing from another.

Final checklist before you book

This guide was published and reviewed on 18 October 2026 against College Board’s current 2026–27 pages. Dates, fees, centre availability, technology requirements, ID rules and university policies can change. Recheck the official pages when you register and again before test day.

  • The SAT has a clear purpose in your college list rather than being booked by default.
  • Your date leaves enough time for preparation, score release and every application deadline.
  • Your legal name matches an acceptable original physical ID for testing in India.
  • The selected centre, international fee and any extra charge are visible before payment.
  • Your device is supported, Bluebook-ready and able to stay charged for the full session.
  • Your preparation uses timed official adaptive practice and an evidence-based error log.
  • Each university’s current score-reporting and superscoring policy is recorded separately.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the SAT cost in India in 2026–27?

College Board lists a US$68 registration fee plus a US$43 international fee through June 2027, for a standard published total of US$111 before any selected-centre, late-registration or other additional fee. Check the official checkout total because fees and exchange rates can change.

What are the next SAT dates after October 2026?

As reviewed on 18 October 2026, the remaining published dates are 7 November and 5 December 2026, followed by 6 March, 1 May and 5 June 2027. Each has separate regular and late deadlines, and an available date does not guarantee a seat at a preferred centre.

Can I use Aadhaar as SAT identification in India?

College Board currently accepts a valid Aadhaar PVC Card with name and photograph or the original hard-copy Aadhaar letter issued by the Government of India. It does not accept printouts, copies, screenshots or electronic Aadhaar cards. A qualifying valid passport is also accepted. Verify the current India-specific page before test day.

Is the SAT compulsory for studying abroad after Class 12?

No universal rule applies. A university may require, accept, recommend or decline to consider SAT scores, and the policy may differ by campus, course and intake. Check every target institution’s official admissions page before registering.

How long is the digital SAT?

The test has 134 minutes of question time: 64 minutes for Reading and Writing and 70 minutes for Math, with a 10-minute break between the sections. Check-in and administrative time make the full test-centre visit longer.

Can I take the SAT at home in India?

SAT Weekend is delivered digitally in Bluebook at an authorized test centre, not as a general at-home exam. You bring an approved device or, if eligible and approved, use a requested College Board loan device at the centre.

What is a good SAT score for an Indian student?

There is no universal good score or pass mark. The total scale is 400–1600. Compare your result with the official policy and recent score context of each target university, while remembering that a prior admitted range is not a guaranteed threshold.

When will SAT scores be available?

College Board says scores are typically available online two to four weeks after the test, and it publishes date-specific release information. Leave a buffer before application deadlines and verify whether a university needs an official report or permits self-reporting.
