Japan Student Visa for Indian Students: 2027 COE, Funds & Checklist

Understand Japan’s Student status, the school-led Certificate of Eligibility process, financial evidence, India VFS submission, arrival registration and legal part-time work.

Japan student visa: what Indian students are applying for

For a degree, specialist programme or Japanese-language course lasting more than 90 days, an Indian student normally needs a visa for the purpose of study and will enter Japan with the “Student” status of residence. A visa is the document used to seek entry; the status of residence granted at landing controls what the student may do and how long they may stay.

The standard route has two linked stages. First, the student or a proxy in Japan—usually the accepting school—applies to Japan’s Immigration Services Agency for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). After the COE is issued, the student uses it for the visa application in India. A COE makes the visa and landing examinations smoother, but Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressly says it does not guarantee visa issuance.

Which courses use Student status?

Japan’s official Study in Japan portal describes Student status for study at universities, junior colleges, colleges of technology, specialised training colleges and Japanese-language schools. The period of stay is decided individually and cannot exceed four years and three months. A short visit for an entrance examination uses a different route, and a temporary visitor should not assume they can simply remain and begin a long course.

Before paying a deposit, ask the institution to confirm that the course supports Student status and that it will handle or support the COE application. Also check the school’s official recognition, admission conditions, language of instruction, attendance rules, tuition-refund terms and intake calendar. Admission and immigration approval are separate decisions.

Step 1: secure admission and prepare the COE file

The COE process begins after admission. In most cases, the accepting school acts as the student’s proxy and files with the regional immigration services bureau in Japan. The institution sets its own internal deadline and document list, so submit complete, consistent evidence early rather than waiting for a visa appointment in India.

Expect the school to examine your academic history, study purpose and funding plan before filing. The exact list varies by institution and case. Provide truthful translations and explain gaps, sponsor relationships or unusual transactions with documents instead of relying on a generic letter.

  • Passport identity page and compliant photographs requested by the institution.
  • Admission forms, academic certificates, transcripts and language results relevant to the course.
  • A clear study plan when the school asks why the course is a logical academic progression.
  • Financial evidence for the student or sponsor, including the documents and history requested by the school.
  • Sponsor identity, relationship, employment or business evidence and an explanation of how study costs will be paid.
  • Certified translations where a document is not in an accepted language.

How much money must you show?

Japan’s official national guidance does not publish one universal yen figure that every student must show. It says an applicant may be asked to prove the ability to cover all study expenses through evidence such as a savings-balance certificate and income or taxation certificates covering the student or guarantor. The school and immigration authority assess the actual course cost, living plan, sponsor profile and evidence in the individual file.

Do not turn a consultant’s round number into an assumed government minimum. Build a documented budget from the university’s current tuition invoice, accommodation costs, insurance, travel and realistic living expenses. The official Study in Japan portal currently reports a national-average monthly living cost of ¥105,000 excluding study and research costs, with average rent of ¥41,000 nationally and ¥57,000 in Tokyo. These are planning averages—not a visa threshold or a guarantee that your city will cost the same.

Financial evidence that tells a coherent story

The strongest financial file is traceable. The balance, income, tax record, sponsor relationship, paid tuition and remaining costs should support the same plan. Keep the underlying bank history and source documents for any significant credit, even if the initial checklist asks only for a balance certificate.

Avoid borrowed “show money”, unexplained last-minute deposits, altered statements and sponsors whose stated income cannot reasonably support the plan. A scholarship or education loan can form part of the file, but provide the official award or sanction terms and show how any remaining gap will be met. Never assume future part-time wages can replace required funding.

Step 2: apply for the visa in India after the COE

Once the COE is issued, follow the version and delivery instructions from the school. Japan accepts an original or copy of a paper COE and, for an electronic COE, presentation of the email or a printed copy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the core student-visa documents as a passport, visa application form, photograph and COE, while warning that the local mission may request additional documents based on nationality or circumstances.

The Embassy of Japan in India directs ordinary applicants to submit through VFS Global. Use the VFS location and consular jurisdiction that apply to your residence, and check the live embassy, consulate and VFS checklists immediately before submission. Japan’s eVISA arrangements advertised in India are for eligible short-term tourism applications; do not confuse that route with a long-term student application.

India application checklist

Treat the COE as a central document, not the whole application. Names, passport number, date of birth, institution, course and intended travel details should agree across the admission, COE, form and supporting evidence. If anything material is wrong, contact the school before submitting rather than correcting it informally.

  • Current passport and any additional passport copies required by the live checklist.
  • Completed visa application form and a photograph meeting the current specification.
  • COE in the accepted paper or electronic format.
  • Admission or enrolment documents and any India-specific supporting items requested by VFS or the responsible mission.
  • Financial or sponsor evidence if requested in addition to the COE-stage documents.
  • VFS appointment or submission records, fee receipt and a copy of the complete filed application.

Visa fee and processing: plan without overpromising

For applications covered by the Embassy of Japan in India’s fee table from 1 July 2026, the visa fee for an Indian national is ₹500 for a single- or multiple-entry visa. VFS charges a separate service fee. Fees depend on nationality and can change with a new consular fee period, so verify the amount and accepted payment method on the page for the responsible mission before submission.

Do not buy a non-refundable flight around a claimed guaranteed processing date. Current embassy guidance warns that processing can vary significantly, cannot be expedited or prioritised around an applicant’s schedule, and may require additional examination. Submit only after the COE and required documents are ready, track through the official channel and wait for the issued visa before treating travel as confirmed.

What happens when you arrive in Japan?

At the border, immigration decides landing permission and Student status. Mid- to long-term residents entering through New Chitose, Narita, Haneda, Chubu Centrair, Kansai, Hiroshima or Fukuoka Airport are generally issued a residence card during immigration. At other ports, the passport may show that the card will be issued later.

After establishing an address, register it at the municipal office within 14 days, bringing the residence card—or the passport if the card is to be issued later. Keep the residence card with you as required, complete school enrolment and insurance instructions, and maintain copies of your passport, visa, landing permission, card and address registration.

Can an international student work part time in Japan?

Student status does not itself permit employment. Before working, obtain permission to engage in activities outside the status of residence. An eligible first-time student who will live in Japan for more than three months may be able to apply for this permission when landing; otherwise follow the Immigration Services Agency procedure.

With the standard comprehensive permission, work is normally limited to 28 hours per week and up to eight hours per day during long school holidays defined by the institution. Work in adult-entertainment businesses is prohibited, even for a role that may appear unrelated. Work must remain secondary to study, and poor attendance or unauthorised work can affect continued status.

Common Japan student-visa mistakes

  • Assuming an admission letter alone is enough and ignoring the school’s COE deadline.
  • Treating the COE as a visa guarantee rather than evidence used in a separate decision.
  • Using an unofficial fixed “funds requirement” without matching it to tuition, location and sponsor evidence.
  • Submitting inconsistent spellings, academic dates, sponsor information or unexplained bank credits.
  • Using the short-term tourism eVISA route for a long-term course.
  • Booking non-refundable travel before the visa is issued.
  • Starting paid work before obtaining the separate permission or exceeding its conditions.
  • Missing the 14-day municipal address-registration requirement after settling in Japan.
  • Assuming a student visa guarantees part-time income, post-study work or permanent residence.

A practical 2027 planning timeline

Start 10–12 months before the intended intake by comparing recognised institutions, course language, admissions tests, tuition and city costs. Around 6–9 months before intake, complete applications and collect sponsor evidence. Once admitted, meet the school’s COE deadline and respond quickly to any request. After the COE is issued, recheck the current India mission and VFS instructions, file the visa application and keep travel flexible.

Before departure, arrange accommodation, carry the admission and COE records needed for entry, understand residence-card and address-registration steps, and budget without relying on part-time work. After arrival, finish municipal and university onboarding before taking employment.

This guide was reviewed on 15 October 2026 for students planning 2027 study. Visa fees, submission arrangements, school checklists and immigration procedures can change, so the Embassy of Japan in India, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Immigration Services Agency and your accepting institution remain the sources of truth for your application.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Certificate of Eligibility the same as a Japan student visa?

No. A COE is issued in Japan and confirms that the proposed activity appears to meet the landing conditions. You then use it in the visa application in India. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that a COE does not guarantee a visa.

Who applies for the COE for an Indian student?

The student or a proxy in Japan can apply, but Japan’s official study portal says the accepting school acts as proxy in most cases. Follow the institution’s internal checklist and deadline.

How much bank balance is required for a Japan student visa?

The official national guidance does not publish one universal bank-balance figure for every applicant. You may be asked for savings, income or tax evidence showing that the student or guarantor can cover the actual tuition and living plan. Use the school’s instructions and keep the source of funds traceable.

What is the Japan student-visa fee for Indian citizens in 2026–27?

The Embassy of Japan in India lists ₹500 for Indian nationals under the fee table effective from 1 July 2026, with a separate VFS service fee. Confirm the current amount and payment method when you submit because fee periods and charges can change.

Can I apply for a Japan student visa without a COE?

Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says an application can be made without a COE, but it requires extensive verification documents and may take several months. The normal student route is to obtain the COE through the school first.

Can Indian students work while studying in Japan?

Only after receiving permission for activities outside Student status. The standard limit is normally 28 hours per week and up to eight hours per day during the school’s long holidays, with prohibited sectors and other conditions.

Does a Japan student visa guarantee post-study work?

No. Student status is for study. Working after graduation generally requires an eligible job and a change to an appropriate status of residence, or another specifically applicable status. Rules and eligibility must be checked at that time.
