January 2027 Intake in the UK: Application Timeline for Indian Students
Work backwards from January 2027 to organise your shortlist, application documents, offer conditions, finances, CAS, visa, accommodation, and travel.
Is the January intake right for you?
A January start can suit students who need more preparation time after graduation, missed an autumn deadline, or find a suitable course offered mid-academic year. However, January availability is narrower than the main autumn intake and differs by university, level, and subject.
Choose the course for its academic fit and outcomes—not simply because it starts in January. Confirm the exact start date, teaching calendar, placement structure, fees, scholarship deadlines, and whether accommodation and support operate differently for the winter intake.
September to October 2026: shortlist and apply
- Define your subject, qualification level, budget, and preferred locations.
- Check January 2027 availability on official university course pages.
- Confirm academic prerequisites and English-language requirements.
- Prepare transcripts, degree documents, CV, references, passport, and course-specific statements.
- Submit early enough to resolve missing documents and references.
- Track every application, condition, deposit deadline, and scholarship requirement.
October to November: compare offers and meet conditions
Compare the curriculum, total cost, location, student support, professional recognition, and offer conditions before accepting. Do not judge an offer only by the initial deposit or a headline scholarship.
Complete English testing or academic conditions promptly. Follow the university’s instructions for accepting the offer, paying a deposit, completing credibility or compliance checks, and supplying financial documents before it issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
Prepare UK Student visa finances
For the Student route, you generally need funds for outstanding course fees shown on the CAS plus the applicable living-cost amount for up to nine months. The current official guidance lists £1,529 per month in London and £1,171 per month outside London.
Financial evidence must satisfy the current rules on account ownership, permitted evidence, availability, and the required holding period where applicable. Recheck GOV.UK immediately before applying because the amount and evidence rules can change.
November to December: CAS and visa application
You need a CAS reference before applying for the Student visa and must apply within six months of receiving it. Verify that the CAS accurately reflects your identity, course, fees paid, and qualifications used for admission.
Complete the online application truthfully, pay the applicable charges, provide biometrics, and submit the required documents. Depending on your circumstances and course, you may also need tuberculosis testing, ATAS clearance, consent documents, or other evidence.
December to arrival: plan cautiously
- Avoid non-refundable travel until the visa is granted and checked.
- Arrange verified accommodation and understand deposits and contracts.
- Keep university, accommodation, insurance, and financial contacts accessible.
- Complete pre-enrolment and arrival tasks requested by the university.
- Carry essential identity, visa, CAS, accommodation, and financial documents in hand luggage.
- Allow time for winter travel disruption and university closure dates.
Frequently asked questions
Do all UK universities offer a January intake?
No. Availability varies by university and course, and the January selection is usually smaller than the main autumn intake. Check the official course page.
When should I apply for January 2027?
Apply as early as practical once the course opens. Working during September and October 2026 gives more room for offers, conditions, finances, CAS, and visa processing, but each university sets its own deadline.
Can I apply for a UK Student visa without a CAS?
No. You need the CAS reference from a licensed student sponsor before submitting the Student visa application.
