What is the Duolingo English Test?

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online English-proficiency assessment taken on a computer in a private room rather than at a test centre. It measures reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and uses an adaptive design: the difficulty of some questions changes according to the test taker’s performance.

Convenience does not make it an informal test. A certified result depends on identity checks, a secure computer setup, a phone camera recording the testing environment, and compliance with detailed rules. Before buying the test, confirm that every course on your shortlist accepts it for your intake and applicant type.

Is the DET accepted by universities abroad?

Duolingo reports that more than 6,500 programmes accept the DET worldwide, but that headline is not a promise that every course at every institution accepts it. Policies can differ by undergraduate or postgraduate level, department, pathway, campus, intake, and whether the result is being used for admission or another purpose.

Check the current English-language requirements on the exact course or admissions page, not only an aggregator or an old list. Confirm the required overall score, any subscore conditions, the latest acceptable test date, and how the result must be sent. If the wording is unclear, obtain written confirmation from admissions before paying for or taking the test.

Admission acceptance is not automatically visa acceptance

A university may accept a DET result for admission while immigration authorities apply a different English-evidence rule. Never assume that one test result completes both stages. Check the government guidance for your destination and the instructions from your education provider for your specific course.

The United Kingdom illustrates the distinction. GOV.UK says a higher education provider can assess English itself for degree-level study and may use a different test, while applicants who must take a Secure English Language Test need an approved provider. Your university should state on the CAS how it assessed your English where that route applies. Similar distinctions can exist elsewhere, so verify the visa position separately before choosing a test.

Understand the current test format

The official structure has three broad stages: setup and identity checks; a computer-adaptive assessment; and writing and speaking responses. The writing and speaking samples are shared with institutions that receive your result, so treat them as part of your application presentation even though the question experience differs from a fixed-paper exam.

Current task families include vocabulary selection, fill-in-the-blank and passage completion, dictation, interactive reading and listening, photo-based writing and speaking, interactive writing and speaking, and a writing sample. How DET scores work

The certified overall score runs from 10 to 160 and reflects performance across reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Universities may also review subscores and the writing or speaking samples. A score that meets one institution’s published minimum may be below another programme’s requirement, and meeting a minimum does not guarantee admission.

Build one requirements sheet for your shortlist and record the exact overall and subscore thresholds from official programme pages. Aim for the highest confirmed requirement with a realistic buffer instead of relying on a generic “good score.” DET results remain valid for two years, but a university may impose its own recency or application-deadline rule.

Indian test takers need a valid passport

The current accepted-identification table lists a passport as the accepted document for India; it does not list an Indian driving licence or another government photo ID as an alternative. The passport must be valid and include your full legal name, complete date of birth, recent photograph, expiration date, and country of issuance.

Create the test account in the same legal name shown on the passport, including middle names and additional surnames. Do not use a photocopy, a screenshot, a digital image displayed on another device, or a damaged document. Recheck the accepted-ID page shortly before testing in case the country-specific policy changes.

Prepare the room, computer, and phone correctly

The current rules require a private room and a compliant computer setup. The phone camera must record your head, shoulders, computer screen, and keyboard during the test. You must stay in frame, keep your ears, eyes, and mouth visible, and avoid looking away from the screen except when typing.

• Use one computer, one keyboard, one mouse, and one phone; remove extra screens and devices.
• Check the computer camera, microphone, speakers, internet connection, and phone position before starting.
• Close browsers and every other application, including communication, streaming, remote-access, predictive-text, proofreading, or reference software.
• Remove headphones, earbuds, paper, notes, and writing materials from the test area.
• Do not read prepared answers, take notes, record questions, interact with anyone, or speak or type before the prompt tells you to.
• Complete the official room, ear, face, and ID checks exactly as shown in the test application.

Results, validity, and score sharing

Duolingo’s current help pages say standard results are delivered within two days after the completed test, while the optional Faster Results service reduces the stated turnaround to 12 hours. Neither route guarantees a certified result: the submission still has to pass review, and an application deadline should include time for retesting or resolving an ID or technical problem.

After certification, use the “Share Score” function in your account. The current process allows selection of up to 40 institutions, and an application ID should be included where requested. Sending a score is not the same as applying, so also complete the institution’s application and confirm that the correct university, campus, programme, and application record receive the result.

A practical DET preparation plan

Start with the free official practice test. It takes about 45 minutes, uses the same task types and adaptive experience, and returns an estimated score range. Repeat it under realistic conditions to learn the interface and identify whether vocabulary, listening accuracy, reading speed, typing, spoken fluency, or structured writing needs the most work.

• Week 1: take a diagnostic practice test and compare the estimate with your highest confirmed programme requirement.
• Weeks 1–2: practise concise spoken and written responses, accurate dictation, vocabulary in context, and timed reading every day.
• Week 2: rehearse the full technical setup, including the phone-camera angle and a clean, quiet room.
• Before purchase: confirm the current checkout price, credit validity, deadline, ID, and programme acceptance on official pages.
• Test day: use a stable connection, remove prohibited items and software, follow every on-screen instruction, and allow uninterrupted time.
• After certification: send the score through the official account and verify that the university has matched it to your application.

When should you choose DET instead of IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL?

DET can be a practical choice when all of your target programmes confirm acceptance, you have a compliant home environment, and you perform comfortably in an adaptive test with short, varied tasks. A test-centre option may suit you better if your room, internet, equipment, or ability to maintain the strict camera setup is unreliable.

The best test is the one that satisfies every required stage and lets you demonstrate your English reliably—not simply the one that appears quickest.
